About the Calorie Calculator
A calorie calculator estimates your daily calorie needs based on factors like age, sex, weight, height, and activity level, useful as a starting point for weight management goals.
The Mifflin-St Jeor formula (used for the base calculation)
Men: 10×weight + 6.25×height − 5×age + 5
Women: 10×weight + 6.25×height − 5×age − 161
weight= body weight in kilograms
height= height in centimeters
age= age in years
This gives your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the calories your body needs at complete rest. That figure is then multiplied by an activity factor to get your daily calorie needs.
Activity level multipliers
| Activity level | Multiplier | |
|---|---|---|
| Sedentary (little or no exercise) | 1.2 | |
| Lightly active (1 to 3 days/week) | 1.375 | |
| Moderately active (3 to 5 days/week) | 1.55 | |
| Very active (6 to 7 days/week) | 1.725 |
How to use
1
Enter your age, sex, height, weight, and activity level.
2
View your estimated daily calorie needs for maintenance.
3
Adjust the activity level if your routine changes.
Limitations
This formula gives a population-level estimate. Individual metabolism varies based on genetics, muscle mass, and health conditions, so actual calorie needs can differ from the calculated figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is this estimate accurate for everyone?
This provides a general estimate based on common formulas, but individual metabolism varies, so actual needs may differ from the calculated figure.
Should I use this for a medically supervised diet?
No, for any specific health or weight management plan, consulting a doctor or registered dietitian is recommended rather than relying solely on a general calculator.
